Our favorite boys.

If you've been around this blog for long, you'll recognize these faces.
What was so fun for us, though, was seeing them in Chicago!
Our dear friends the Wilsons decided to spend part of their vacation in Chicago with us and we loved every minute with them.
And, as you can tell, we just can't get enough of those boys (our godsons).
We love them to pieces!

Processing.

It's not often you can say, "I spent my morning in mental health court."
But that's exactly where I found myself the other day.
For nursing school, we have a clinical rotation in a mental health facility - and I'm in the thick of it right now. So when the patient I was talking with said she had court later, I made sure I found a way to sneak onto the van to take me there, too. (I didn't really sneak... but I really, really wanted to go).

So there I sat, in the back row of the court room, just trying to take it all in. I watched as doctor after doctor testified about patient after patient: discussing their mental illness, why they were admitted in the first place,  how they were treating the patient, and how much longer he should stay in an inpatient setting.

And then I watched as patient after patient argued their cases (if they were able) and pleaded to be let out sooner.

It all felt so helpless, watching them walk in with so much hope and leave with their heads hung and tears in their eyes. I'm not even sure how to process it all except to pray, "Come, Lord Jesus. Come."
Only He is able to take this kind of pain, hopelessness, and helplessness and somehow redeem it all for His glory.

On a much lighter note, I've had so much fun with the schizophrenic and manic patients. (Maybe that means I've been in the psych hospital for too long?) They are incredibly comedic, and sometimes they realize it and other times they don't. Today some of us students got an impromptu dance-a-thon, a special rendition of "Amazing Grace" with harmony and all, and a lot of laughs. Thank the Lord for these special people who brighten my day. I'm not sure how you could be a psychiatric nurse without little breaks from these sweet people. :)

A beautiful gift.

I got the sweetest package in the mail yesterday.
My Grandma Tunney sent me these:

Three pairs of the most incredible scissors for sewing!
As soon as I got home from work, I pulled the dressmaker shears out of the case and had Shawn try them out on a scrap piece of fabric.
"Like butter..." he said. :)

I found out last week that Brighter Day bags will soon be sold in our local Franklin Whole Foods store (I'm still kind of in shock!!!) and Grandma was the very first person I called. I knew she'd be the most excited, as it was her who imparted her passion for sewing that I now have.
The scissors will be so very helpful in the coming days and weeks as I sew my little heart out in preparation for selling in a retail setting.
But more importantly, it's the love and support behind such a gift that is so priceless to me.
Grandma, these scissors are a treasure.
You couldn't have sent a more perfect gift.
I love you!

Before we left for Chicago for a long weekend, Shawn & I went out to our garden to pick what was ripe and leave it for our neighbors. We picked several of these:

But somehow, we missed one that really needed to be picked, and it got quite huge while we were gone.

I wish you could've seen it in person.
It literally fed four people for dinner last night!
I love that little garden of ours!

We're in Chicago.

And we're having the best time.
We've been here just 24 hours and have done so much already.
We've walked through our dear Washington Square Park and admired it all in bloom.

Walked through the arch at Moody and reminisced.

Stood in the exact spot where we met almost 5 years ago.

Enjoyed a delicious brunch with the Suttons, then visited their new gorgeous apartment. It looks like something out of a magazine! (Is anyone surprised?!)

Took a long walk with our friend Drew.

Sipped a Mojitea from Argo.
Walked, walked, and walked some more. Got some blisters to prove it.
Ate the best gluten-free food (including 2 loaves of gluten-free bread!) at Wildfire (and will probably go back tonight).
Sipped some Jamba Juice at the bottom of the Hancock Tower.
Stuck our toes in a very chilly Lake Michigan.

Admired the city lights.

The plan for tonight: dinner with the Wilsons, the Taste of Chicago, and fireworks at Navy Pier!

We love this city, that's for sure.
And July 4th weekend is the best time to be here!
