With Shawn's new schedule at the church, Sunday is the busiest work day of the week, so his weekend is now Friday and Saturday. So since Friday is the new Saturday in our family, we took a "weekend" day trip to Wilmington, North Carolina. It's an easy 2 hours from us, and it's the closest we've ever lived to the ocean. It's obvious our boy has Newby blood in his veins... he couldn't get enough of the beach. We're excited to make many more trips to the coast!

North Carolina readers: Any other coastal spots you'd recommend? We'd love to go to Nags Head next, but would love to hear your suggestions!

  1. My fiance's family has a home in Sunset Beach, NC. It's an adorable little island about an hour south of Wilmington.

And Wilmington is one of our favorite cities, too! The river walk and quirky shops are fantastic. It's also known as the Hollywood of the east coast... there seems to always be a movie or show being filmed!

  4. It's funny reading about a two hours trip from the coast is the shortestyou have even lived from the ocean.... I have always had the ocean less than 7 kilometres away, but that might be the charm of living in a country with as much coast as here in Denmark.
I don't think i could live that far away from the ocean :-)

  6. We vacation at Holden Beach - but, for a weekend trip, I'm a fan of Atlantic Beach. You can hit up the Aquarium, Fort Macon and you're a short drive from Beaufort! :)

  7. Thinking about y'all as your family settles into its new home (which is of course so much more than four walls and a roof). Sending fuzziest thoughts and prayers during this new adventure!

  8. Being in DC for the past 4 years & traveling all up & down the east coast (from NY to Myrtle) the Outer Banks is the best place to visit! The further up you go (Corolla, Duck, etc) the more secluded it is! Hatteras or Pea Island on the southern end are also really nice! Enjoy!

  9. Hey Whitney! I grew up in Raleigh and Wilmington was always our favorite day trip to the beach. When you have a whole weekend, Sunset Beach is sweet with the Bird Island Nature Preserve and proximity to Calabash (known for its fried seafood and ice cream.) A great pitstop in that area is Southport - to eat at the Provision Company. If you have longer, the Outer Banks are amazing! Manteo is a sweet town with fun history, but as the others have said, Duck and Corolla are beautiful and quiet. I also haven't seen anyone mention Bald Head Island yet which is another awesome place for a family vacation. You take a ferry over and travel around on the island in golf carts. One last suggestion - a great way to see the NC coast is to try to visit all of the lighthouses!
