A lesson in courage.

Yesterday marked my first big job interview for a full-time RN position at the hospital I've been hoping to work at.

Leading up to the interview, I prepared my résumé, rehearsed possible interview questions, pulled out my business clothes, and tried to breathe. But one lingering question weighed heavily on me... "Do I tell them I'm pregnant?"

I discussed it with several professors, and I got mixed answers. On the one hand, they said, the employer cannot discriminate because of pregnancy and shouldn't need to know at the first interview because they may be tempted to write me off right away. And because the job market for nurses in Nashville is not ideal (to say the least), I should give it my best shot.

On the other hand, it felt more upright - and more risky - to go ahead and let them know and have all my cards on the table.

Ultimately, with a lot of prayer and a lot of guidance, I decided to bring it up. To just lay it all out there, so I wouldn't be hiding a thing. The bump is already getting difficult to hide (just ask Shawn who helped stuff me into my interview pants!). And more than that, I cringed at the thought of starting the job in a month and obviously showing, and then having them think I had been hiding it from them. So with this decision, what was already a nerve-wracking interview became even scarier.

But you know what? At the end of the interview, when she asked if I had anything else to add, I felt pure peace wash over me as I explained that I wanted to be forthright, and that I was pregnant. I plan to work as long as possible before the baby is born, and after I give birth as well, and she seemed totally unfazed by it. She said a hearty, "Congratulations!" and then offered me the job. On the spot! Full-time days. Full benefits. Starting in less than 3 weeks. I feel like I won the lottery!

I am so thankful for the wise counsel of those who encouraged me to do the brave thing, because in my heart, it just feels like the right thing. And now I can enter this job in just a few weeks with confidence and freedom. Oh, and a whole lot of excitement. :)

  2. YAY!!! Congrats!!! God is always good to His children that try to do the right thing. This reminds me of the movie Courageous. Have you seen it? If not, in the movie one of the characters is asked, by his boss, to lie. It turns out his boss was testing him. And because the man told the truth instead, he was promoted!!! I'm so excited for you!

P.S. love the new blog header.

  9. I totally understand this fear. I'm not even pregnant, but I would like to be at some point in the future and we routinely book clients more than 9 months in advance, so I'm constantly wondering how that's going to play out. What if they book me non-pregnant and I show up with a bump on their wedding day? If I get pregnant, do I owe it to my clients to tell them ahead of time, or just proceed as normal and try not to show weakness even if I need to throw up in the nearest trash can? Will they think it's unprofessional to work while I'm pregnant? Will they think I won't be able to effectively do the job they hired me for? WILL I be able to do the job they hired me for? Are these fair expectations on a woman in the work-force? Would they rather I find another second shooter for Tim? I'm thinking way too hard about this, but this post encourages me to hope that clients will just be happy for us when that time comes. Congratulations again, Whitney! All that hard work in school is paying off perfectly.

    1. I totally, totally see where you're coming from (obviously). My issue was, "What if I don't start until June and then have to take off 6 weeks when October/November comes around? I'll hardly be out of orientation, which won't be very helpful to them." Thankfully they were great about it - and I'm starting earlier than planned. I think the great advantage to what you guys do is that it's pretty much one day. One very long and tiring day. :) But if you're able to handle that one big day, they should just be excited that you're pregnant as it really doesn't affect what you do. It is such a weird pressure we feel, though. Embarrassment, almost. Thankfully, I've had so little nausea and haven't even felt pregnant (except for not fitting in pants!) so not much has changed in life other than my growing belly. I know not everyone is so lucky, but maybe you'll be the same! Can't wait for a little Tab someday! :)

  12. Whitney...I was reading your blog from the longest time, and then "lost" you for a while when I transferred over to a new reader. Then the other day I was looking for freezer paper stencil tutorials and I remembered your site...and I looked you up again. (in fact, I've linked to your stencil tutorial in my post this week!)...but aside from that, I've come back to your blog to find out that you are having a baby (congratulations!!) I also had a little girl this year (she's turning 1 on Monday) and I beyond thrilled for you!

I love this post. What a brave thing for you to do. I've spent the last several years completing my Masters on employment related issues, and I would like to think that your experience is true everywhere, but sadly, I don't think that is the case. I think you did the right thing and I'm sure your attitude, personality and qualifications shone. An inspiring post :) All the best!!

    1. You're so right... not always the case! I know that technically/legally they can't discriminate, but it doesn't mean they won't - or find some other reason not to hire me. I was so thankful for a referral from another employee from within the hospital as well as a degree from a highly respected school, and I almost felt like within the first few minutes of the interview I knew they'd offer the job. It's such an amazing feeling knowing I have it, though, especially that they know I'm pregnant and are fine with it! Praise God.

  14. Hi, Whitney!

I just found your blog today, and I feel like we've been friends forever! Crazy, I know. I'm in a very similar situation to you - just found out about my pregnancy, finishing grad school, job hunting, trying to decide if I should tell interviewers about Baby... and praying so much all the way! What a blessing your posts have been to me today, when I've been having a stressful day. It's such a joy to know that someone out there understands!

Adding you to my blogger feeds, and hoping to stay in touch!
