The second most common question my patients ask me these days is: "What are you going to name your baby?" (The first most common being, "When can I have my next pain pill?")
Apparently, even under scrubs, my body doesn't hide this baby very well. I'm almost 6 months along and most definitely showing. Baby is suuuper active and likes to kick me in all directions for most of the day. Does he ever sleep?! It's making me wonder.
Anyway, back to names.
For several weeks, we were about 95% set on a name.
And then, for some reason, when we found out "it" was a "he" and saw lots of ultrasound pictures, that name just felt less fitting. So we're kind of back to square one, trying to think of names all over again. We would love to have our baby's name not in the top 100 baby names. It also has to go with Newby (obviously), which is kinda tough.
So I thought I'd share some of my favorite names. They aren't on our "A" list - and they're not necessarily Shawn-approved - but I still love them nonetheless. Shawn and I play this little game where I will come up with about 20 names I like, then he will say yes or no to them. My rule is that he has to wait at least 5 seconds before responding, and he has to give it a number between a 1 and a 10 (otherwise, he was nixing all of my brilliant ideas).
So here's my "B" list for now: names I love that are along the lines of what we're going for...
Here's where you come in... we need ideas! Would you comment with some of your favorite baby boy names? We could really use the help!
PS - When Shawn saw this post, he said, "You're really brave. Did you make sure and tell them these are your favorite names, not mine?" :)
The only names I'd go for on that list are Leland (because the only man I know with that name is cynical in personality, but has a heart of gold) and Briar, because apart from it not being common, its deep and earthy and handsome. Personally I think Rylan is too cutesy and the rest are either too strange or hard to imagine a child with them. But then again, you can say the same thing about a baby named George :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sarah! Do you have a baby named George?!
DeleteOur boys' names are Ian and Liam, and if this baby is a boy, he'll be Rory. Our last name is Irish, though, so that helped narrow our options. : ) I can't say that I would pick any of these, but that doesn't mean that one (or more) of them won't be PERFECT for YOUR little man. That's what I love about baby naming--it's so personal.
ReplyDeleteOur last name is English (I think?) so we like English/Irish/Scottish names, too! My maiden name was Tunney - also Irish and hard to match, I think. Love your boys' names!
DeleteI really like some of those names! I love the names Garrett and Tyler :) -Courtney
ReplyDeleteOur taste is really similar!! I'm a fan of every single name on your list except for Dashiell and Fields. Some of my favorite boy names are : Everett, Evan, Anderson (Anders for short), Easton, Anden, Bailor, Micha, Noah, Paul, and Niall. Hope that helps a bit! Feel free to let me know what you think! :)
ReplyDeleteOoh love so many of those! Especially Anderson, Easton, and Bailor (though I went to Baylor University for a while, so not sure that would work). :)
DeleteI love Beckett, Averitt, Aspen and Eaden. I think Grey is my favorite boy name, though, along with Noah. :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE Grey too - Shawn's not a fan. He says "Grey Newby" sounds like he's depressed or something. Haha I totally see what he means, but I still love it!
DeleteAhhh, I can see that. Haha. Maybe as a middle name? Oliver Grey Newby? Presh!

ReplyDeleteI really like Rylan & Pierce. Another name that I really wanted to use but couldn't (sounds weird w/ our last name) is Brooks.
ReplyDeleteI like Aspen and Rider, but that may just be the snowboarder in me. I like Hunter, Leigh/Lee and Blaise
ReplyDeleteSilas. Hudson. Carter. Cooper. Tucker. Lincoln. Sawyer. Finley/Finn. Just to name a few. =)
ReplyDeleteLOVE oliver!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your taste in names, so cute :) My favorites are Beckett and Aspen! As someone commented I also love the name Anderson, Anders for short!
ReplyDeleteI love baby names! I'm a teacher so I love and hate names. As silly as it sounds think about how hard/easy it will be for them to write it, spell it and for others to remember it. Here are a few of my favorites: Rhett, Kaden, Camden, Parker, Porter, Noah,Emerson, Asher, Weston, Ezias, Ezra, Taylon, Lee, Kempton, Brooks, Riley, Bronson, Brody, Cooper, Collin, Alix, Ryder, Hayden, Jeremiah, Emery...lots of names, but I figured I might as well put them all on there for you! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteSo many good ones! I think as a teacher it would be hard because you'd know so many with those names and would have to block them out when you're naming your own. :) Love Porter, Weston, Brooks, Bronson, Hayden. Beautiful.
DeleteThose names are so unique Whitney! My top choices for boys names are Noah, Garret, Parker and Landon :)
ReplyDeleteok you already know the 'E' name i like and approve of :) but im going to comment on these since you told me to take a look haha....
ReplyDelete- Leland (pretty sure michael w smith attempted to start-up or manage a group by this name a few years back haha)
-Rider (doesnt kate hudson have a son with this name??)
-Aspen (immediately think colorado)
- Oliver (Oliver Twist?)
-Leyton (didnt Kasia have a crush on an ATO named Leyton??? lol)
-Fields (no way is Shawn letting this one happen)
-Briar (like a briar patch?)
-Dashiell (you and i are too white to have a child named this lol of maybe im just pronoucing it in a ghetto way..?)
-Averitt and Pierce I actually dont mind :)
Having taught kindergarten for 5 years, the only thing I can say is that you would never want your child to get laughed out due to having an odd or really uncommon name because sadly at 5 years old kids dont have a filter on what they say! You want your son to have a name that is strong and suite him well as he grows into a man as well. But In all honesty, whatever you name you decide on, I know I will love :) Praying for you and baby!
Hahaha I knew I'd get an awesome comment from you (that's why I texted you in the middle of the night... sorry!). I totally think of Kasia's Leyton too (or was it Leighton?). Too funny. I thought you didn't like one of those last two because he was a bad kid in your class?? And umm.. I'm totally holding you to the "whatever name you decide on, I know I will love" comment. :)
DeleteDarcy:)
ReplyDeleteI love biblical names that aren't used a lot. Obadiah (Oby for short). Malachi. Eli. :)
ReplyDeleteOliver is a precious name!
ReplyDeleteSo fun to choose a name! I think about this on a regular basis and we don't have kids yet. I really love a lot of your B list names so I'm curious to find out eventually what your "a" list names are. I also really like the name Grayson. My husband isn't keen on it, so I'll pass the name along to you. I also love Noah, Eli, and Micah.
ReplyDeleteWe'll share the "A" list after baby is born, I'm sure. Love Grayson, too!
DeleteMy favorite name has been Zeke (Ezekiel) for a long time, but I don't know if I would ever name my child it. My boyfriend always jokes that a child with that name would constantly get called "Zeke the geek." I love it though! Also really love Pierce and Rylan, and agree with the other commenter who mentioned Malachi as another cool biblical name - I think I would probably use Ky (not sure how I'd spell it though) as a nickname for that.
ReplyDeleteWhen we were naming babies we did not find out the sex until delivery, so we had to have a boy and girl name ready. After 3 girls, our boy name, Nathan Ansil, was pretty worn out. And after 3 girls we were totally ready for girl #4, had that name picked out way early. Delivery day, Dr. said,"It is a ...boy? Didn't know you could do that." We had talked about boy names while in the delivery room (1 hr) and then had to decide. Aaron Michael. Had he been a girl, Miriam. Best to you, Whitney.
ReplyDeleteFavorite non-traditional boy names: Bentley, Aiden, Grayson, Lachlan, Blake, Mason, Emerson, Eli, and Zane
ReplyDeleteLove Lachlan! Forgot about that one!
DeleteLove the name Ephraim. :)
ReplyDeleteI always wanted Parker but my husbands cousin just had a baby and named him Parker. So my backup is Canyon. For girls I' have Marlie and Emerson (I may spell it Emmersin). Aspen to me sounds like a little girls name.
ReplyDeleteDeanne
I've always loved the name Asher for a boy. My best friend's first little boy is named Locke. Also love that. Especially the meaning behind it. I'm big on meaning.
ReplyDeleteLove following along on your blog! Naming kiddos is no easy task :-) It took MONTHS to find a name we both liked and that "fit" for ours. Tobin is our son's name - it's hebrew and means "God is good" - it fits perfectly! Ya'll will find the perfect name for your little one, too :-)
ReplyDeleteLove that meaning. :)
DeleteIf I happen to marry an English or American, I will totally name my son Elliot. But I like Kenneth too.. so we could call him Kenny :D
ReplyDeleteI LOVE rylan and I also like Leyton and some of the others. My other faves that aren't on your list are Trace, Jaeden, Jaspen, Elijah, Elisha, Ezekiel, Hosea
ReplyDeleteah...totally hear you on the not wanting a name on the most popular list :). that was my #1 priority when we named our son - kiah (after hezekiah) john. my husband liked all the (boring) more common names so we had a really hard time deciding. as for names we didn't pick: cruz, blake, brody, & isaiah. some friends from church have a boy named zephaniah - they call him "zeph" or "zephan" for short :).
ReplyDeleteI love Oliver-And I think the best made up profession ever would be "Here let me name dat baby!"
ReplyDeleteGrey, Jamieson, Nigel, Jack, Sam, Elias, Liam, Rhett, Graham, Elijah,
I am so much better with girl names! I love Avonlea (like Anne of Green Gables) Oh, Gilbert-----NO ; ) The meaning of names are what I love best! Whatever you choose will be PERFECT!
Avonlea is so pretty! Love that!
DeleteI really like Oliver from your list! If I ever get married and have a boy, I've loved the first/middle name combination of Brighton Jones. I came up with it a LONG time ago (like, preteens or so!) but I really like it! It sounds English, and I liked to think that it stood for "Bright One." Now, I don't know if I'd have the guts to actually name my little one that, but it went along with Anna Denise and Raychelle (pronounced like "Rachel") Leanne.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun part of the baby-making process, though :) Have fun! You'll find the perfect one!
Haha, one of my names that wouldn't make the top 100 list is Leonidas. Also, Spurgeon. {haha, twins. Leo and Geo} But, names are completely a personal preference thing! :)
ReplyDeleteA friend named her baby Major, which is growing on me. I like Anders. We named our son Dallas, I always get asked why.
ReplyDeleteI have a Beckett! We often call him Becks :) People compliment it all the time!
ReplyDeleteI love the names Rylan and Beckett! How do you pronounce Eaden?
ReplyDeleteThe names I love are Wesley, Finn, Bronson, Ezra, Dalton and I know its popular but I love the name Adam!
I'm thinking Eaden would be pronounced like Aiden (which I love, but is so popular)... love Finn and Bronson, too!
DeleteWhat was the name you were 95% sure on? If you don't mind my asking :)
DeleteAnd I also love the names Arden, Titus and Jude.
Can't share quite yet. :) It's still on our A list of about 3 names, so it may come back around as our favorite. We'll all know once we see the baby!
DeleteI leave in France so I don't know these names ( here : famous names of the moment are Théo, Matthéo, Paul, Alexandre, Arthur, Louis...) but we have named our son Julian and I think this name exist in United States no ? if I had to choice : I think that Aspen is a name I like !
ReplyDeleteMy votes are for Oliver, Logan and Avery! :)
ReplyDeleteSome of my not so normal favs - Griffin, Freeland, Lincoln, Rhys. Love Oliver and Beckett. Maybe Baird?
ReplyDeleteLove every single one of those. Especially Lincoln and Rhys!
DeleteGraham
ReplyDeleteEverett
Brett
Brent
Owen
Brian vetoed Finn. I loved Beau, too, which he wasn't keen on. Luckily we had girls.
ReplyDeleteGresham
ReplyDeleteMiller/Millar
Pride
Morgan
Gresham is a definite fave. :)
DeleteI found your blog searching for sewing tutorials and I love it!
ReplyDeleteSo akward how names differ in different countries. I am german and so many of those names are quiet unfamiliar to me (apart from Oliver - a name i really love). In Germany there are really stringent regulations about how to name or not to name a baby. So we don't have that much of a choice.
I think its really hard to find a beautiful boys name. For me its easier to think about how to name a girl. Names i really love (but they might be to german or to common in the US) are Jonah, Oskar, Emil, Silas, Lasse, Ole
Wish you all the best for your pregnancy,
Leona
My husband was born and raised in Germany and even though he's an American citizen, his parents almost couldn't name him Shawn because in Germany that's more of a girl's name! :)
DeleteI must say that I love reading your blog! I am a nurse as well, since 2007, and live right outside of Chattanooga, TN. My favorite boy baby names are Elliot, Everett, Graham, and Avery. Good luck finding a name for your sweet baby!
ReplyDeleteLove all four of those. Thanks, Leigh!!
DeleteJust a note of caution: I've known two Aspens and they were both girls. Of these names, I like Oliver and Pierce. :)
ReplyDeleteI've had names chosen for years for my future children if God allows, and my boy name has been Beckett Jac forever. I LOVE that name. :) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love the names Aaden, Colton, and Easton. I'm sure whatever y'all decide will be absolutely perfect :)
ReplyDeleteHi Whitney, I came across your blog through Bethany Tabilloux's blog (my blog is on her adoption blog list along with yours). Congratulations on your baby boy! I loved the name choosing process for my daughter - my husband and I also wanted a unique name, but one that was also easy to pronounce and spell so she wasn't having to correct people all the time! (Our last name is mispronounced 90% of the time so we thought we should at least give her a simpler first name!) Anyway, a lot of your names reminded me of names on another adoption blog friend's list so I thought I'd send you the link to the names she considered for her little guy (who they named Fields, incidentally). Here you go! Best of luck! http://michaelandkristyn.blogspot.com/2012/06/dear-fields-boy-names.html
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog and was so excited for your baby news! Congrats!! My husband and I are due in 4 weeks with our first, a boy as well. I think we have officially named him as of last evening: Cole! I love it and thought I would share since I know choosing your baby's name is one of the hardest things you'll ever do. Best of luck for a happy and healthy pregnancy and in choosing what you will name your sweet little one :)
ReplyDeletePS) Our list included Hunter, Carter, Parker, Noah, Ames, Noah, Owen and a million more...
Oops, guess I liked Noah. Said it twice :)
ReplyDeleteI love Oliver, Eaden, Leyton and Fields. Great names!

My most favorite parts of having our babies was experiencing them move for the first time and picking out names. Our children are Joel Calvin, Brynna Kate, Annelise Elizabeth, Ember Sophia...and we are done! I adored each of our names and still do. We get asked about Ember the most: where we heard it or came up with it. Personally, when we picked names we wanted to make sure for the boy names that they were masculine names that weren't boy or girl names. We also used family names for middle names: Calvin and Elizabeth. Our Ember is 2 months old so our boy name was Joseph Daniel. Everett was another family name we liked.
ReplyDeleteI personally know girls named Rylan and Eaden so I wouldn't choose them. I understand the desire to choose a name that isn't crazy popular, but on the other hand I don't want to saddle my child with a name for life that they will be embarrassed by. Most importantly, have fun! And if you want to dodge the "why'd you pick THAT name?" comments...don't tell anyone your chosen name until after you've given birth and named the baby. :) Most people aren't brave enough to say those things after the baby is born! lol
We made the decision to keep our kiddo's gender a surprise and have settled on 2 girl name choices but have absolutely NO idea regarding boy names!! We both like Joel (the Lord is God) and Micah (who is like God) for their meanings but are looking at using one of them as a middle name since they both sound a little strange with our last name. I've really enjoyed looking through your list- maybe ill pass a few on to the hubs! Beckett maybe??
ReplyDeletei love leland!
ReplyDeleteStumbled upon your blog via Pinterest. Love your bow clutch. Congratulations on your little man. I have two little boys and there is nothing better. My favorite names (obviously) are theirs, Jack and Vance. Enjoy being pregnant! I miss it so!! All the best to you.
ReplyDeleteI Love Oliver! :) Silas and Flynn would work with Newby too! Isn't being a first-time parent fun?!!? You are going to make an amazing mother and God will give you the perfect name for your son. :)
ReplyDeleteI realize I'm a little late to the party but I'm throwing out: Garrison, Barrett, Addison and how about a simple one like Sam. But when you see his little face you will know what name is the right one, trust me. ;) Best wishes!!
ReplyDeletei know i'm late to the game here, but i just found your blog (and realized i bought my bridesmaid clutches (which we loved!!) from your shop!). my fave boy names are: finley, owen, oliver, brody, and liam! we aren't close to having kids just yet, but my husband shoots down my hypothetical names all the time. i'll have to try your wait 5 seconds before responding trick when our time comes ;)
ReplyDeleteI leave in France so I don't know these names ( here : famous names of the moment are Théo, Matthéo, Paul, Alexandre, Arthur, Louis...) but we have named our son Julian and I think this name exist in United States no ? if I had to choice : I think that Aspen is a name I like ! indian names
